BOSS FROM HELL _ People were asked to share their best boss-from-hell stories.
“Boss told others I took too many sick days. (I’d left work that day in an ambulance from a grand mal seizure.)”
“My boss fired me when I had to miss work one day because I felt sick from donating blood.”
“I had a boss who’d hold team meetings at Hooters. All we ever did there was down beer and watch sports.”
“I had a job where every rep was required to be on the phone and at their desk at all times. That meant we had a ‘bathroom request’ button on our computers. Any time you had to use the restroom you’d click the button, cross your fingers (or legs!), and hope for the best. The requests got kicked up to my not-so-great manager and nine times out of 10 denied immediately.”
“I once had a boss who, while I was replying to a question addressed to me by their boss in a meeting (with whom I had worked before and had developed rapport), actually put their hand less than an inch in front of my face to silence me so that they could answer instead.”

ASK THE PAST _ The blog Ask the Past looks to old publications for advice on everyday problems.
HOW TO KILL BEDBUGS, 1777 — “Spread Gun-powder, beaten small, about the crevices of your bedstead; fire it with a match, and keep the smoak in; do this for an hour or more; and keep the room close several hours.
HOW TO GROW A BEARD, 1539 — “To make hair and beard grow. Take honeybees in quantity and dry them in a basket by the fire, then make a powder of them, which you thin out with olive oil, and with this ointment, dab several times the place where you would like to have hair, and you will see miracles.”
HOW TO ELIMINATE BUGS IN THE GARDEN, 1777 – “Procure the hollow claws of Lobsters, Crabs, &c. and hanging them in different parts of the garden, the insects creep into them, and are easily taken; but the claws must be often searched. The problem with this remedy is that you’ll have to eat a lot of lobsters. Organic gardening is full of hardships.”
HOW TO CATCH A RAT, 1768 -Dealing with an infestation of subtle vermin? Robert Smith offers a “method hitherto unattempted,” in which you lure the little beasts into what looks like an exciting rat funhouse. Some assembly required. Remember likewise, that they are a very subtle vermin, for if they in the least suspect what you are about, you cannot catch them… set your great cage out of the way at some distance that the other Rats may not hear them squeak, for that will baulk your sport and occasion them to run away.
