THE FINAL WORD ON THE SECRET TO HAPPINESS _ You can only use one word to finish this sentence, and you may be right or wrong because science has given us the answer: “The secret to happiness is _______.” Did you say money? Sex? Career? Children? Hope not, because you’d be wrong. According to four studies that examined the secret to long-lasting happiness, the one word is: Respect. A researcher (Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley) found that higher sociometric status rather than socioeconomic status is the key to happiness. The reason is simple: We quickly adapt to new levels of income and return to our old levels of happiness, but being respected and having influence within a particular group never gets old.
