YOU ARE CHEESING YOUR CHEESEBURGERS WRONG _ Summer’s darn near over and we’re just now being told we’ve been cheesing our cheeseburgers wrong? Some internet guy says we shouldn’t be adding the cheese to our burger while it’s still on the grill. There’s plenty of heat once the burger comes off and you don’t need the cheese to melt so much it starts to run off, leaving a thinner layer and messing up the grill. HIS TIP: Right before you pull the burger off the grill, put however much cheese you want onto the inside surface of the top bun; then pull the burger patty off the grill and lay it down onto the cheese; then load up the bottom bun with the veggies and condiments; then put the top half of the burger down onto the bottom half. The cheese, as it melts, adheres to the porous top of the bun. There will be uniform cheese thickness across the entire burger, so that as you eat the burger you get the delicious creaminess of cheese in every bite, and a burger that doesn’t slip apart as soon as you lift it for a bite.
TONGUE IN CHEEK GARDENING TIPS _ I’m no expert, but here are my gardening tips.
• By this time of Summer, your vegetable garden should yield some succulent vegetables. Unless you procrastinated and didn’t get the seeds planted until last week. Here’s hoping you can harvest some tomatoes before they’re covered in snow.
• If you’re growing zucchini this year, you’ll need a lot of recipes to handle your garden’s harvest. You can always make zucchini bread, fried zucchini, and my favorite: dumping bags of zucchini on your neighbor’s front porch in the middle of the night.
• Don’t forget to compost your lawn clippings, fallen leaves, and food waste from the kitchen. After your garden is done for the year, you can mix the compost into the soil so you’ll have a healthy garden next year. Or you can just wait until Halloween and hand out bags of compost to trick-or-treaters.
• And remember that the secrets to a successful garden are: a little water; a little sunshine; and a lot of fertilizer. Sorta like this radio show.
