Independence Schools Placed On Secure Door Status Thursday Morning

Three schools within the Independence Community School District were put into a secure door status Thursday due to a suspicious person walking on a nearby trail.  According to a release from Independence Police, around 9:30 AM, they received a call of a suspicious male who was walking on the trail. When the male came into contact with someone else who was walking on the trail, he then walked into a cornfield. Officers responded and checked the area, but did not find anyone. The Independence Community School District was notified of the situation due to the close location of all three schools. The district was then advised to go into a secure door status. After a check with Independence Fire, Buchanan County Sheriff’s office, and emergency management, there was still no one found within the area of the trail or the cornfields.  There was no information that the person was a threat to anyone or possessed any type of weapons.
