HOT POCKET HOUSE STILL ON THE MARKET _ The gorgeous house on the California coast owned by the inventor of Hot Pockets is still on the market. Many real estate professionals thought the 11,000-square-foot home in Newport Coast would be snapped up inside of a week, but the listing is still up. Paul Merage is the inventor of Hot Pockets, and he’s asking $40 million for the home, which has six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and a range of high-end amenities, including a wine cellar, home gym, spa, elevator, infinity pools, and a tasting room. Hot Pockets were invented by Paul and David Merage, Jewish Iranian brothers who founded Chef America Inc. in 1977 after immigrating to the United States. Initially launched as “Tastywich” in 1980, the product was rebranded as Hot Pockets in 1983 and became a hit due to its patented crisping sleeve and convenient microwave preparation. In 2002, Chef America sold Hot Pockets to Nestlé. • LINK
3 THINGS TO STOP CLEANING _ Do you agree with these tips?
• Grill grate. Instead of scrubbing the grate after using it, leave the grill on high with the cover on for 15 minutes. Residue will cook away.
• Shower curtain liner. Liners are so cheap that laundering them to remove mildew is a waste of time. Just replace your liner every six months.
• Pillow. After washing and drying a pillow, it’ s never quite the same. Instead, throw it out and buy a new one every six months.
OVERPROTECTIVE PARENTS INHIBIT KIDS _ Overprotective parents inhibit more than their kids’ freedom: they may also slow brain growth in an area linked to mental illness. Children whose parents are overprotective or neglectful are believed to be more susceptible to psychiatric disorders — which in turn are associated with defects in part of the prefrontal cortex.… Japanese researchers found that kids with overprotective parents had less grey matter in a particular area of the prefrontal cortex than those who had had healthy relationships. Neglect from fathers, though not mothers, also correlated with less grey matter. This part of the prefrontal cortex develops during childhood, and abnormalities there are common in people with schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.
