Tossing the bags on a holiday weekend

CORNHOLE _ ‘Tis the season for cornhole, aka bags, aka tailgate toss. When the barbecue grills fire up the cornhole equipment comes out — and sticks around right into football tailgate season.
• The name “cornhole” comes from the original bags being filled with dried corn kernels, which are tossed onto a board with a hole in it.
• Regulation cornhole boards measure about 4 feet (47½ to 48 inches) long by 2 feet (23½ to 24 inches) wide, with a 6-inch diameter hole centered 9 inches from the top edge of the board.
• The official distance between the front edges of two cornhole boards is 27 feet for adult play, though shorter distances (12-15 feet) are used for kids, seniors, or casual play.
• Cornhole bags are regulation sized at 6 inches by 6 inches, weighing between 14 and 16 ounces (approximately one pound). They are traditionally filled with whole-kernel corn, but plastic resin pellets are also common and allowed in official play.
• The game originated in the Midwest U.S., particularly Cincinnati, Ohio, gaining popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. Some origin stories trace it back to 14th-century Germany or Native American games, but the modern game as known today is linked to Cincinnati and nearby Kentucky.

HOW MUCH CAR CAN YOU AFFORD? _ If you’re confused about how much you should spend on your next car, don’t worry. Just use this rule-of-thumb from the I Will Teach You To Be Rich blog. It’s the 20/4/10 rule:
• 20 percent down payment on the car.
• 4-year car loan or less.
• 10 percent or less of your gross monthly income goes towards car expenses including gas, insurance, DMV fees, repairs, parking/speeding tickets, and interest payments.

WHEN YOU NEED TO STEP AWAY FROM YOUR PHONE OR KEYBOARD
WHEN YOU’RE ANGRY — While anger can be a powerful motivator, it can create some regretful social media comments and emails. If you’re angry about an event or situation, by all means use that as fuel for your writing. Just don’t publish or click send until you’ve had a chance to edit it while you’re calmer.
WHEN YOU’RE DRUNK — Don’t drink and text. Or email. Or Facebook.
WHEN YOU’RE EXHAUSTED — After you’ve put the kids to bed you stumble into bed and start checking Facebook, Twitter and emails. You’re bleary-eyed and your brain is halfway to dreamland. Now’s not the time to post what you think is your deepest tweet of the day. Even if you’re not angry or drunk, you’re tired — and waking up in 7 hours to a backlash is not a way to start a day.
