A cheesy favorite for the “Big Game”

THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT NACHO CHEESE _ It’s a Super Bowl party favorite! Americans will spend a collective ten million hours to prepare food for the Super Bowl, which is probably why we lean on nacho cheese — it’s so simple to warm up and add to a bowl.
• Nachos were invented — by accident — in Mexico at a restaurant called the Victory Club. Back in 1943, Chef Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya needed to feed a group of military wives who had arrived in his restaurant without warning, but couldn’t find any food in the kitchen. In desperation, he melted cheese on some tortillas and sprinkled it with peppers. The dish was an instant hit — and a legend was born.
• It would take 55 orders of Taco Bell nachos to get your daily recommended amount of vitamin C. That would total around 1,550 percent of your daily allowance of fat. But it would probably make the most delicious heart attack ever.
• A survey a few years ago claimed that nacho cheese is the number one craving among pregnant women.

CAN’T SLEEP? LISTEN TO BACON _ The snap, crackle, and pop of bacon cooking can put people right to sleep. YouTube videos of bacon cooking are popular among those who suffer from insomnia. The smell of the salt-cured pork is associated with waking up in the morning, but some say the sound of it cooking can lull them to sleep too. Studies have shown nature sounds, like rain and thunder, can soothe people to sleep, but experts say the sound of meat cooking could have a similar effect.

WEIRD EXCUSES FOR BEING LATE TO WORK _ Human resource managers were polled about some of the weirdest excuses employees have used for being late for work.
• “A Vaseline truck overturned on the highway and cars were slipping left and right.”
• “I thought of quitting today, but then decided not to, so I came in late.”
• “I had to chase my cows back into the field.”
• “My cow bit me.”
• “All of my clothes were stolen.”
• “I was confused by the time change and unsure if it was ‘spring forward’ or ‘fall back.’”
• “A black bear entered my carport and decided to take a nap on the hood of my car.”
• “There was fresh powder on the hill. I had to go skiing.”
