HAPPY 55TH BIRTHDAY, EGG MCMUFFIN _ Happy 55th birthday, Egg McMuffin! Herb Peterson created the McMuffin breakfast sandwich out of frustration 55 years ago. He was hungry for breakfast, but McDonald’s restaurants didn’t open until 11 AM. As a newly minted McDonald’s restaurant operator in 1971, Peterson believed he wasn’t the only McDonald’s fan who was hungry before 11. So he asked a local blacksmith to make an egg ring to keep the fried egg round and tidy for a hand-held sandwich. Peterson concocted the meal in his McDonald’s restaurant in Santa Barbara and asked Ray Kroc, McDonald’s founder and Peterson’s close friend, to give it a look the next time Kroc dropped by. Peterson set up a display and won over Kroc. The Egg McMuffin debuted four years later, in 1975. (McDonald’s has the history on its web site.)
FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS THAT BUG US MOST _ A first world problem is defined as “a usually minor or trivial problem or annoyance experienced by people in relatively affluent or privileged circumstances especially as contrasted with problems of greater social significance facing people in poor and underdeveloped parts of the world.” In a survey, these are the first world problems that bug us most. No particular order.
• Call from unknown numbers
• Having no WiFi
• Not being able to find the end of the clear tape
• No-one replaced the toilet roll
• Unexpected items in the bagging area at self-checkouts
• A closet full of clothes but nothing to wear
• Having so much ice in a drink you can’t get to the actual drink
• Hot outside but cold in the office
ROAD RAGE INCREASES DURING THE SUMMER _ A study of aggressive driving habits finds that road rage increases dramatically during the summer months. AAA says sunny days, Friday afternoon peak hours and moderately congested traffic all contribute to push anxious drivers into a rage. The study found that one in four road rage incidents occurs during the 4 to 6PM afternoon rush hour. Just more than two-thirds of road rage incidents occur on sunny days.
