INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE U.S. INTERSTATE SYSTEM _ Since many of us will be using the U.S. Interstate System to get to our vacation destinations, here are a few things you might want to know.
• The U.S. Interstate System, also known as the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, is the largest public works project in American history, spanning approximately 48,000 miles of highway.
• Each interstate is given a unique designation number, with odd numbers running north-south and even numbers running east-west. The numbering starts in the south and west, increasing as one moves north and east.
• The red, white, and blue shield sign with the word “Interstate” written above the route number was designed in 1957 by Texas Highway Department employee Richard Oliver.
