Waterloo Police released their end-of-the-year crime stats for the 2023 year, and the data shows a positive trend. From 2022 to 2023, there was a nearly 7 percent drop in crime, with violent crime dropping 3% and property crime dropping 17%. The 2022 report also showed these stats decrease from years prior. Police recovered just over 200 firearms last year, and saw a 55% reduction in shooting injuries. Homicides in Waterloo also decreased from 9 homicides in 2022 to 3 in 2023. Officials did say however that there was an increase in traffic fatalities.
