Sherwood, who was 56, died at his home in Grundy County on Friday.   Captain Sherwood joined the Cedar Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1997.  In 2001, he was hired as a firefighter, and he was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009.  Captain Sherwood served on all of the fire shifts over his decades of service, and he was the department’s subject matter expert in fire truck maintenance and firefighter protective gear.  He received many awards and commendations throughout his career and he was honored as the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015. The Grundy County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of Sherwood’s death.   He is survived by his family from Dike.  Richardson Funeral Service in Cedar Falls is assisting the family.
