Hudson boys basketball defeats Unity Christian, 54-51, advances to 2A State Championship

The Hudson high school boys basketball team defeated Unity Christian, 54-51, in a Class 2A State Tournament Semifinal this afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The 2-seed Pirates jumped out to an 18-10 lead after the first quarter and led the 6-seed Knights, 31-20, at halftime.

Leading 45-34 after three quarters, Unity Christian stormed back in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 51 with a Tyce Van Donge jumper with 37 seconds remaining.

A made free throw from Tanner Michael and two made free throws from Camden Davis staved off the Knights’ comeback attempt and sent Hudson back to the state championship game for the first time since 1993.

Davis led the Pirates with 16 points and was joined in double figures by Michael and Lyle Olsen, who added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Unity Christian freshman Tyce Van Donge led all scorers with 24 points.
